Julian began working with wood as an apprentice to a Cotswold cabinet maker graduating to working as an antique restorer and conservator with Hereford City Museum. You may not have a Julian Monkley piece in your own home yet -but anyone who has visited the Old House in Hereford will have seen evidence of his work on much of its 16th Century furniture.
Julian has expertise in the stripping, repair, and refinishing of all types of fine antique and heirloom wood furniture, to include the application of old-world and modern finishes.
All work is undertaken by Julian; an experienced restorer, using traditional methods and materials. At Monkley Furniture we take great pride in our restoration service and honour each job with the care and attention it deserves. Julian has earned the trust and respect of the community for his quality work over the past two decades.
Conservation
Conservation is the process of preserving existing antique finishes. The process involves gentle cleaning and touching up existing finishes and the application of fine waxes to preserve the original state of the piece. The process is an extension of the care a piece has been afforded over its life span.
Restoration
Restoration is the repair and replenishment of old, existing finishes, using like materials and original techniques. After meticulously cleaning and repairing the piece, the existing finish is re-amalgamated and mixed with new materials, all spread over the surface. When dry, the piece is left with a fresh, crisp look, where most scratches and blemishes have been worked out.
Refinishing
When refinishing a piece, the original finish and stain is removed back to bare wood. While the chemical stripping process removes the finish and stain, it does not affect the "patina" of the wood, the natural changes in colour and texture which only age can impart. After stripping, the piece is then sanded, stained and then multiple coats of clear finish applied to enhance the inherent beauty of the wood and protect it from heat and humidity.
